This paper analyzes and describes the transformations of youth activist commitment during the democratic transition in Argentina (1982-1989). Firstly, we explore the reconfigurations of activist experiences and practices. These reconfigurations show a process of deconstruction of the “total activist” model and of the sacrificial mandate, typical of youth activism in the 1960s and 1970s, and a transition towards new figures of democratic activism in the 1980s. In the diversity of activist careers that we observe in the1980s, we identify a first a first group among those who were politically engaged during the democratic restoration or before it. Secondly, we discuss some of the transformations within political or partisan spaces, and we consider the ways in which new generations of young activists are recruited. Thirdly, we analyze the impact of the democratic transition on the relationship between political activism and culture. Finally, we explore the emergence of the category "life" as a key to understand relevant mobilization experiences during the period and forms of legitimation within democratic activism. The article uses empirical results from broader research on youth activism between 1982 and 1989, conducted by the Politics and Youth Studies Group (GEPOJu, IIGG-UBA).
