Abstract

Modern literature on human development highlights that the earlier in life people invest in increasing and equalizing skills, the greater the probability of human development and social mobility. Individuals’ early development is framed by their closest social context, that is, the family. The family is the cornerstone of human development but also of inequality. Studying the family is of paramount importance in order to understand the mechanisms of human development and reproduction of poverty. This paper takes a step in that direction by emphasizing the connection between family characteristics and structures, and child and youth development. It documents that families are changing; that such changes reinforce divergent patterns in terms of couple formation, duration, and fertility between individuals of high and low socio-economic status and educational level; and that such contextual differences may be an important factor in child development and the reproduction of social inequalities.
